Do you remember the Top Secret project I was working on before Christmas? I can now share it - yippee!
My friend's husband had asked me to make her a Christmas present, the brief went something like this, "can you make a bag, you know what sort of thing she likes, oh and it must have pockets. I'll leave it entirely up to you." Oh the pressure of getting it right! I'm happy to report that she likes it - thank goodness.

My friend always carries lots of 'stuff' around with her, she is a very talented artist so space for sketchbooks and pens/pencils was a necessity. She is also a mum to a 4yr old therefore her hands need to be free.
I'd chosen Melody Miller's typewriters before deciding what type of bag I would make, and after much deliberation I settled on Amy Butlers High Street Messenger bag, (no taking chances making up my own pattern on this one). Although I did reduce the bags size which meant reducing the size of all the pattern pieces - it took ages!
After reading various reviews around the web, I also decided to swap the canvas interlining for heavy sew-in interfacing I wanted it to be able to stand up on its own without being floppy and went for the velcro fastening just in case the magnetic snap interferes with any electrical equipment. The pattern itself is really well written and easy to follow, but be warned there are a lot of pieces and it definitely isn't a one night project!

It is lined with Kona Parsley and Carribbean, all the fabric is from one of my favourite UK online stores The Village Haberdashery.

What a great bag! Lucky friend.
ReplyDeleteLooks fab, but i know EXACTLY what you mean about Amy Butlers patterns, they seem really, really wordy, and if there are too many words, i'm a bit of a thicky and get easily confused!! Your friend must be absolutely delighted. : )
