Half term is over and Will was back at school today and I thought I'd share this non-sewing musing with you.
"I never thought I'd look forward to school term times as much as I do, holidays are hard work"
Babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers all need looking after and constant entertaining which as we know is bl**dy hard work. But so are school holidays!
Maybe it's me trying too hard to actually entertain. Will would have been happy to spend the whole week playing Lego (it was too cold and muddy for him to play outside, which is where you usually find him in the warmer months), but he would get bored playing on his own and would want me to help - It's a well known fact I'm useless at Lego, this type of thing is often said "Mum, I'll show you because you don't know how to build a Lego Star Wars space ship with guns and things...." etc. etc.
This was the result from one of those conversations on Day1 of half term last week.

I wanted him to 'do stuff' which met with resistance and occasional pre-teen strops. It wasn't all bad though.
By total fluke it turned out to be quite a cultural week.
The Hepworth Wakefield is just across town, it's one of our favourite places to go, there is a fantastic playground (great for burning off energy) and they always have free workshops on in the school holidays which they actively encourage children to get involved, but DO NOT TOUCH the sculptures!

York is another favourite of ours. It's only after we got home though did I realise we hadn't taken any photos of the Viking Festival, damn and blast! Vikings wandering around town, workshops and mock fights - classic!
The boys went to the National Railway Museum and had a great time, (I'm not going to bore you with a heap of photos of Will stood next to big engines, which all looked the same to me). This shiny green engine has just been lovingly built by steam enthusiasts.

I escaped and paid a visit here...

The Quilt Museum and Gallery and shop in York. The museum is managed by The Quilters' Guild and it's a credit to them, such a lovely museum and the ladies were so friendly. There are three exhibitions on at the moment.
Town and Country - a traditional quilting exhibition which looks at quilting heritage through the different social classes. This quilt was made up of tiny fussy cut hand pieced hexes, it was absolutely beautiful.

CQ@10 - a celebration of the Contemporary Quilt Group's 10th birthday. Tony Howell's photograph of East Poole Tin Mine was the inspiration. There are some amazing interpretations, the Contemporary Quilt Group has very talented members.

Signature V by zero3 Textile Artists - zero3 are a group of modern textile artists who are dedicated to promoting modern textiles as an art form. With "Signature" as a theme, each artist expressed themseves through textiles. Another inspirational modern exhibition.
Exhibitions change regularly at the museum, and they have an active Learning Centre offering a range of courses and "Chat and Craft" events, oh and don't forget the shop!!
I'll definitely be visiting again, I'm even considering joining The Quilters Guild.
If you are ever in York, I recommend a visit it's well worth the entrance fee (currently £6 for non Guild members) and a perfect way to while away a couple of hours.
So, to go back to my original musing.........
........maybe I should learn to go with the flow more and not get as hung up on what Will will be writing in his 'What I did on holiday..' news book. Let him get on with what he wants, which in turn should let me get on with what I want to do as well.
After only one day we are back into our routines and all is well again, *big sigh*
Sarah x

Fantastic post and I couldn't agree more! Sometimes my kids are just happy making stuff up without me 'entertaining' them ;)
ReplyDeleteMy auntie volunteers at the quilt musuem and I've been a couple of times, it is brilliant!
Wow, lots of exciting places visited, and I am v jealous that you went to the Quilt Museum. I've been trying to convince Rob to go for a weekend away to York so I can do a crafty visit, but he obviously knows me to well, and figured I was up to something.
ReplyDeleteHolidays are so difficult aren't they?! I try a balance of down days chilling out at home and doing something (for all our sakes!). My favourite thing to do though is to ask what their favourite part of the holiday is - always thinking it will be the day we went out blah de blah and it's normally something daft like 'when we got to stay up late and eat chocolate'!!!!! If I ever find myself in York I will check out the Quilt Museum - it looks fab :) x
ReplyDeleteBlimey you have been busy!! I am ashamed to say although I live in Wakefield I have never been to the Hepworth!! And that is despite the fact my husband Tony and I pass it on a regular basis and say to each other 'we really must go'. Looks as if your son enjoyed himself though X
